Weekend Trip to Kennewick

Every summer we do our yearly trip over to Kennewick. It’s such a nice visit with my dad and step-mom Ann. They always cook us the best food, the kids run around and play in the water and it’s just so relaxing.  This summer, Malia had her cast  - so she was exiled to castoff island. Not really, but we finally gave in and “bagged” her (put a plastic bag over her cast). It was over 100 degrees while we were visiting and we just couldn’t handle the sadness in her face while she watched Jackson play in the blowup pool. She did really well and it made the trip that much nicer for her to play (she is our water baby).

Malia’s Broken Leg

So the weekend of our August date night, Malia had an accident.  The Sunday following our date night, we picked up the kids and Malia was inconsolable. She didn’t want anyone but me and was hysterically crying. When I asked my mom what happened she said that they went down the slide together, and that when she put Malia back in the stroller, she started screaming bloody murder. At the time, my mom thought she was stung by a bee or teething, so she dismissed it, but Malia did not.  That afternoon, we went to a BBQ at my friend Jenny’s house and Malia was just not herself. She had just finally started walking, but refused to do so at the BBQ. When we got home, she was still just not herself, cried herself to sleep and was up every 2 hours crying. Finally, at midnight I brought her into our room and lay her down to inspect her. That’s when I noticed she wasn’t moving her right leg. I immediately text my mom and gave Malia some advil – I figured she had a sprained ankle.

My mom text back and indicated that when she and Malia were going down the slide (Malia on my mom’s lap), Malia’s foot got caught underneath my mom as they were going down the slide. Ouch!

I made the first appointment with the pediatrician that I could – 9am.   After going to our pediatrician, then across the street to Evergreen to get x-rays, then back to the pediatrician it was clear – Malia had a broken leg. She would need a cast for a month.

When I called my mom to tell her, she was just devastated.  Shane was devastated, I was devastated and Malia was happy as a clam.

After Shane got off of work, we headed to the Federal Way Children’s Hospital to get the cast put on.  Luckily, (with the help of snacks) Malia did great. We were told to NOT get her cast wet at all and we agreed…..

Of course, it just so happened to be the weekend before our 100+ degrees trip to Kennewick and 3 weeks before our trip to Lake Chelan. It sucked, but Malia pushed through and only got pissy a few times.

Note to all moms, grandmas, babysitters, and anyone else that takes care of kids – DO NOT GO DOWN A SLIDE WITH A CHILD ON YOUR LAP. Apparently, it is very common that kids break their legs doing this. You are the adult; if the kid can’t go down the slide by themselves, they shouldn’t be going down the slide. Learn from my example…..

Before/After : Hot Yoga

As most of you may know, I am a AVID Hot Yogi. I started practicing Hot Yoga on August 23, 2011 (see HERE) and I promised I would update with my results in a few months.  Well I never updated, obviously, and my reasons were silly.  I don't know why, but I got really embarrassed by my results; I got embarrassed by how fast I got amazing results.  After a few months of doing hot yoga, my body was in really great shape, my body was toned, sculpted and almost unrecognizable. I felt like if I posted I would be giving false hope to people - I almost felt like a freak of nature.  By January, when we went to Cabo I felt like my body was better than it was pre-baby....pre-wedding, and that made me a little uncomfortable as I know so many women that struggle with their weight/body.

I am now in a place where I feel comfortable posting pictures because I want to be an inspiration. After a year of practicing Hot Yoga, I can now show that it IS possible to obtain the results you desire. It is possible to be a mother of 2, work part-time, be a full-time housewife with a husband that travels out of state every other week and still have a work out regime that provides results.

Although I try really hard (summer has been BRUTAL) I do my best to practice Hot Yoga 3 times a week.  I choose Power Hot Yoga on Tuesday and Thursdays at 8:15pm and I do a weekend Hatha class either Saturday or Sunday at 8am.  I like switching it up by taking different classes because each class truly takes you to a different level mind & body. Power is very fast and fluid and I really have to push myself to make it through each and every class. Hatha is more peaceful to me, it allows me to dig deep and force my body to do things it doesn't normally do.  With each class, I walk out feeling regenerated, encouraged and luckily, 10lbs lighter.  I can't tell enough people about yoga and how it has changed my life. I feel like a new person, and a person I enjoy being around.

I was so scared to post pictures of myself - especially one of me in my undies (what was I thinking -  could I not get one of me in my bikini?!?!?).
