After much thought - we decided to do the inevitable, kick the binkie. We were noticing more and more how attached Jackson was getting to his binkie and realized that the sooner we get it outta here, the better. Taking away something so loved by our child was really tough – and we knew the easy choice would be to just let him have it, but we also knew we would be creating a monster if we didn’t do it before Baby #2 arrived.
So I asked around to my mommy friends, message boards, etc. on how they did it – and we figured the “cutting the tip of the nipple” trick would work best. And guess what? It worked! Jackson wants nothing to do with binkies anymore – whew! It did take about 4 days, which we knew, so we decided to do it over Thanksgiving weekend. One screaming toddler and one patient Daddy and mission was accomplished!
So here’s the trick for those of you wanting to kick the binkie. Cut the tips of the nipples off the binkie. Allow your kiddo to still have the binkie whenever he/she wants it. Keep them in all of the same places they normally are (dresser, crib, diaper bag) but the most important factor? CUT THEM ALL. Do not leave one “just in case” one. Slowly, when Jackson would grab one – he would hand it back to me and walk away……then he stopped going to that certain spot his binkie was at – so I threw that one away. After a few days – they were ALL in the garbage and Jackson didn’t even ask for them anymore.

I have a friend who used this technique and it worked great for her too. That's awesome that it wasn't too difficult of a transition. We kicked the binky when she was about 13 month for the same reason...I didn't want to have to do it after the new baby was here. They would have a tough time understanding why their sister or brother can have it but they can't. We just took them all away cold turkey, but she only used them in her crib as it was, so she wasn't overly attached to it. Doesn't it make you feel great when you succeed at a potentially scary parenting task?!!!
